What Is a Mood Board for a Cinematic Photoshoot?

A moodboard is a visual guide that helps shape the creative direction of a photoshoot. It includes reference images—styling, body language, lighting, and location ideas—that bring clarity before we even step behind the camera. The images aren’t mine, but they reflect the tone and energy I want to create with you. Each one helps us build a clear visual language so your session feels considered, artistic, and true to your relationship. This is how cinematic storytelling starts—by getting intentional before we shoot.

1. Morning Ferry Ride - Spring Shoulder Season Narrative Mood Board

There’s something cinematic about a quiet morning ferry—salt on your skin, light streaming through the windows, and time slowing down just enough to get playful. This session is perfect for cozy sweaters, held hands, and whispered conversations with a view. We’ll ride the Wolfe Island ferry while it’s still quiet and crisp—this is your permission to show up comfy, slightly windswept and wildly in love.

One fall day, I took off to randomly explore and found myself in the parking lot queue for the Wolf Island Ferry. I was blown away at the new Wolf Islander III's size, comfort and amenities which made riding the ferry a total experience in itself. Once on Wolf Island, I explored the center village, shops and gallery before heading on a drive for picturesque scenery and locations for portrait session backdrops. There is no shortage of windmills, trails and shoreline to explore. Here are a few images from that trip. I was totally inspired to imagine a few shoots here. 2. Gloomy Urban Café - Spring Shoulder Season Narrative Mood Board

Moody mornings, warm mugs, and people-watching behind fogged-up glass. This cafe narrative invites city energy with a slower pace. Think layered cozy outfits, soft interactions, and editorial candids that feel like stills from an indie film. Introverts sipping in silence or doing the crossword indoors or out in the rain, this is for the lovers who linger.

Sometimes my husband and I will go for a walk downtown with a coffee and (innocently) joke around about what people's stories could be... just people watch and mindlessly chat. We don't do it often enough though so it's become a bit of a core memory for us in our relationship.

3. Local Bookstore – Spring Shoulder Season Narrative Mood Board

A quiet library or bookshop becomes the perfect backdrop for couples who live in their heads and hearts. This shoot is for the ones who fell for each other over shared dog-eared pages and soft moments. We’ll play with light between the shelves, spontaneous reads, and moments that feel deeply personal and still. Literary girlies and thoughtful guys—this is your main character moment.

I love a detour into a local book shop because the staff are always so attentive, with so many suggestions and such a passion for books. I find these shops offer such a personalized experience which would make for such an adorably thoughtful venue for a cinematic portrait session. If this seems too mushy for you, we could juxtaposition it with hilarious book titles that send a message, or over-the-top non-fiction for a comical touch.

4. Parking Garage – Shoulder Season Narrative Mood Board

This one's for the chaos crew—the loud laughers, the adventure seekers, the ones who can’t help but play. A parking garage might sound mundane, but it gives major editorial energy with angles, shadows, and height. Think rooftop spins, backseat snuggles, edgy leading lines and industrial elevator vibes. This shoot channels a bold, cinematic edge—with a hint of rebellion—but still keeps it rooted in real connection. Playful and punchy, just like you.

Parking garages are usually my go-to when I head downtown since they are the most reliable place to find a spot. The rooftops and upper levels are often empty and make for a gritty, interestingly lit spot to escape from the rain and breeze of a windy, Kingston spring or fall day.
