What Is a Cinematic Photoshoot? (And Why You Might Want One)
A cinematic session moves like a story—with a beginning, a middle, and an end. It’s a collection of scenes that hold space for the way you look at each other, the way you move together, and the way light falls across your skin.
These sessions feel like stills from a film. They hold space for the quiet moments: the way your hand rests on theirs, the wind catching your hair, a glance across a table that says everything without a word.
How Is a Cinematic Photoshoot Different From a Traditional Session?
A cinematic session moves slower which is why they are longer than traditional sessions.
Think less perfect smiles and more in-between moments. We capture what you’d do if I wasn’t there with a camera in hand.
We make sure to cover our bases with some traditional shots (so don't fret!) however, you should expect fewer posed shots, and more storytelling. Expect your session to feel like a scene you’ve lived before—a morning on the ferry, a walk along the beach, a quiet coffee together at the kitchen table. Or, a scene you're experiencing together for the first time.
What Should You Think About Before Booking a Cinematic Shoot?
Before you book a session, ask yourself what you really want to walk away with.
Are you looking for a traditional shoot—where you stand in a pretty spot, follow directions, and come away with a few posed photos of how you looked?
Or do you want a different kind of session—one that feels like a slice of your real life, where the story builds naturally through movement, moments, and how you feel in the space?
This is the difference.
When you choose a cinematic session, you’re saying:
- I want photos that show who we are when we aren’t performing.
- I’m okay with letting go of control and letting the story unfold.
- I care more about how it feels than how it looks.
- I want to see the details—the way we move together, the small things I’d forget otherwise. The things I'd never think to photograph myself.
What Does a Cinematic Photoshoot With Me Feel Like?
It’s slow, intentional, hilarious and a little bit messy.
We might meet at a ferry dock at sunrise. You’ll sip coffee while the wind tangles your hair, and I’ll watch for the moment your hands find each other on the railing.
Or maybe we wander through a thrift store, laughing at old records, trying on hats that don’t fit, letting the nostalgia of a forgotten mixtape hit you in the chest.
Maybe it’s a walk through a quiet alleyway as the sun sets, or sitting at a table in a café as the world moves around you and your eyes catch for just a second too long.
These sessions are the day-date you didn't even realize you were having, and the "ordinary" you didn't realize you've been missing, right under your noses!
A Photoshoot That Feels Like a Scene From Your Life
A cinematic photoshoot is planned and scripted from the actual essence and experiences you either already own, or have dreams to live. It’s a chance to slow down, be seen, and hold onto the feeling of what it’s like to be in this moment of your life.
I capture the small moments that tell a bigger story: your hand brushing theirs on a ferry railing, the way you look at each other across a table, the quiet laughter as you leaf through old books, or the freedom of jumping off a dock at dusk.
These are the scenes I want to capture for you.
What Does a Cinematic Photoshoot Look Like?
Every shoot is different, because every story is different. I have a system we work through together to ensure your session is uniquely inspired by YOU.
We start by asking:
- Where do you feel most like yourself?
- What moments do you want to remember later?
- Are you drawn to quiet, still spaces or movement and energy?
- What feels true to you, without overthinking it?
... (and lots more).
From there, we build the shoot around your answers.
Film Scenes That Inspire My Storytelling Approach
These films focus on everyday moments that make us feel like they matter...because they do. Drawing inspiration from other mediums of art help to fuel ideas and demonstrate how what might feel "ordinary" to us might actually be the most beautiful and magically meaningful parts of ourselves, our relationships. Here, I came up with some modern films that inspire the creative juices flowing through my mind. These movies highlight scenes that I'd bet you'd never have imagined as a setting or activity for your cinematic portrait session.
1. The Jukebox Scene
(Inspired by The Life List, The French Dispatch)
Two people in a bar, the low hum of music, glances shared over a drink, a song playing that they’ll never forget.
Your shoot: Kingston dive bar, a couple standing by the jukebox, quiet tension, soft smiles, shadows on the wall.
2. The Ferry Scene
(Inspired by How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, 500 Days of Summer)
Two people standing at the railing, wind catching their hair, the world moving quietly around them.
Your shoot: Wolfe Island ferry, coffee in hand, leaning on the rail, water stretching out in front of you.
3. The Coffee Shop or Diner Scene
(Inspired by Sleepless in Seattle)
A slow morning, sitting across from each other, steam rising from mugs, eyes lingering longer than they should.
Your shoot: Juniper Café or a quiet table by the window—your real café, your real story.
4. The Bookshop
(Inspired by 500 Days of Summer)
Walking the aisles, flipping through pages, pulling out a book that sparks a smile or a memory.
Your shoot: Novel Idea bookstore, hands brushing as you reach for the same spine, shared laughter in a quiet corner.
5. The Forest Hike or Dock Jumping Scene
(Inspired by Dawson's Creek, The Summer I Turned Pretty)
Bare feet on wood, hair damp from the lake, running down a trail, sun cutting through the trees.
Your shoot: PEC trails, Big Sandy Bay Beach, or Gord Downie Pier—anywhere you feel the wind and the water and the shock of cold water on your shoulders.
What It Feels Like to Work With Me
A session moves like a conversation, like a walk you take together. We don’t stop for too long. You move through a place: holding hands, sharing a glance, the wind catching your hair, and I’m there, watching for the in-between moments.
The camera stays quiet most of the time. I’m not asking for poses or smiles, but I do guide you to help you look and feel your best. I’m watching for how you naturally are when you think no one’s looking.
We pick a place that makes sense for you—maybe it’s the ferry, the café where you drink your coffee, a trail you walk together, or the dock where you kick off your shoes and run. The space becomes part of the story.
Your photos will feel like a collection of small moments that add up to something bigger. Light, motion, texture. The details that say: this is who we were, right here, right now. This is what we will want to remember and feel again.
That’s the story I’m telling.
