Less Usual Things to Do When Visiting Kingston, Prince Edward County, and the Thousand Islands, Ontario

What most people are really looking for when they search for things to do in Kingston Ontario for couples isn’t a list of attractions.

It’s a way to enrich the visit and spend time well. Here is a curated collection of experiences and slower itineraries for couples visiting Kingston, Prince Edward County, and the Thousand Islands.

Discover meaningful activities around Kingston Ontario beyond the usual tourist list.

Take the Wolfe Island Ferry to marysville...without a plan

The ferry is free. It runs regularly. And the crossing is long enough to fully exhale. Not to mention, you won't get a better view of the city.

Go near sunrise or sunset if you can. The wind is lighter, the directional light shifts shadows quickly, and the lines of people are thin.

You don’t need to “do” anything on the other side. Sometimes the crossing itself is the point. But if you wanted to, there are all sorts of shops and places to grab a bite on the other side. Check out the windmills or live music at the waterside Hotel Wolfe Island.

They have a big, lantern covered, waterfront patio in the warmer season, and a full service, indoor cafe and restaurant that serves locally grown food as well. You could check out the Wolfe Island Gallery or Wolfe Island Used Book Sale too, depending on when you arrive.

If you’re already considering documenting your trip, this is one of those natural windows where a discreet Narrative Session integrates easily — movement, light change, space.

Find Hidden Gems Along Downtown and the Waterfront Pathway

Downtown Kingston is compact enough that you can cover a lot of ground in a day or two. Parking can be a pain but it's totally walkable and they make an effort to make it accessible as well.

Start at a small café like SENS or ChitChat, an ice cream shop like White Mountain, or "Baked by the Lake" cookies from 23&co. Wander up and around toward Confederation Basin. Cut through side streets - this is where you'll find gold: heritage limestone buildings, colorful doorsteps, sweet gardens and cool alleyways. Stop when something catches your eye.

Once you hit Confederation Basin, stroll along the waterfront pathway. It winds around the downtown marinas, the water-side of the buildings and along the limestone breakwalls. You can see the Ferry and Thousand Islands cruises dart back and forth between Kingston and Wolfe Island. You can catch the gradient sky at sunset or, more impressively, the moon rise over the lake.

You can take in the local street-artists work, peek in the neon-sign illuminated windows, or grab a seat at an outdoor patio at one of the unique restaurants. If you make your way back to Market Square, you can put your feet up in an adirondack chair and roast marshmallows on the public fire pits.

There's tons to do and see during a slow weekend downtown Kingston.

Fort Henry and the Thousand Islands at Dusk

Most people visit during the day, but the light is harsh, the wind is high, and the crowds are loving it.

Fewer linger toward evening.

The stone, the lighter breeze off the water, the view across to both the city and the islands...

If you’re looking for something that feels grounded and atmospheric rather than busy, this is it.

It’s also one of those places where the light does half the work for you. Because the city mostly faces south and east, it's one of the very few places that you can get both a full view of the city, and sunset toward the horizon. Then the city lights up and twinkles on the water. It's worth sticking around for.

If you time it right, you can enjoy the Battery Bistro and enjoy some pub fare as you take in the view.

Driving Highway 33 Toward Prince Edward County

If you have a car, take the old highways. My favorite route is Highway 33 (Bath Rd.).

Take in the expansive view of Lake Ontario as you leave the Thousand Islands.

Stop at Spring Meadow Orchard, Berries by the Bay, McKinnon Brewery Taproom or Thirty ThreeVines Vineyard along the way. Sit longer than you meant to and let the fields open up around you.

Stop to cut a fresh bouquet at a farm or take a hike at a evergreen-scented conservation area. Fish under a bridge.

Of course, make your destination a one of the top-5 beaches in Prince Edward County in time for sunset. I love the dunes beach at Sandbanks for the texture and Lookout area, and Outlet Beach for the gorgeous sunsets, canteen and bike trails. However, Sandbanks is pretty popular and busy. Wellington has a less crowded beach that you can even partially drive on, with lakeside restaurants and shops just steps away on mainstreet, like the Drake Devonshire Inn.

The Country feels different from the city. The air is so crisp and clean. The wildflowers take over the ditches. The time moves slower and the people are wholesome.

Why Visiting Couples Choose to Document the Trip

Most travellers will rely on phone photos. And you probably will, too.

But trips like this tend to blur.

You’ll remember the restaurant name.

Maybe the wine.

Maybe the view.

What often gets lost is what you looked like experiencing the novelty together in those moments: relaxed, unguarded, in awe.

A discreet documentary-style session scheduled alongside your visit allows you to stay present while someone else handles the record, observing as it unfolds.
